This Bill would change the Racing Industry Act 2020 so greyhound racing is no longer a permitted form of racing for betting in New Zealand.
The closure would take effect on 1 August 2026.
To manage the wind-down, the Bill would create a Greyhound Racing Transition Agency, responsible for:
- making sure greyhounds are cared for and safely rehomed,
- supporting workers, trainers, and whānau affected by the closure, and
- overseeing a clear, transparent transition away from the industry.
