Racing Industry (Closure of Greyhound Racing Industry) Amendment Bill

This Bill would change the Racing Industry Act 2020 so greyhound racing is no longer a permitted form of racing for betting in New Zealand.

The closure would take effect on 1 August 2026.

To manage the wind-down, the Bill would create a Greyhound Racing Transition Agency, responsible for:

  • making sure greyhounds are cared for and safely rehomed,
  • supporting workers, trainers, and whānau affected by the closure, and
  • overseeing a clear, transparent transition away from the industry.

Closing date
